Getting To Know the Women of the HVAC Industry

There isn’t a long list of ladies known for their business ventures in the HVAC industry. When the field was just getting started, it was a time when women were expected to be home, so they didn’t have the same opportunities that women have today. It may come as a shock, but a few women in particular helped shape the HVAC industry we know today.

Simply put, without them, the industry wouldn’t be the same. By reading on, homeowners can learn about women’s history and the history of their HVAC system as well.

The Iconic Alice H. Parker

Alice H. Parker was a remarkable woman born in 1895. Not only was she a woman inventor during that time, but she was an African American woman inventor. During the time, this was unheard of. She is famous for inventing her patented central heating system that used natural gas in 1919.

Unfortunately, not a lot is known about her life. That said, she is known as the Mother of Modern Heating. Without her, it is safe to say that the HVAC industry wouldn’t be the same.

Her furnace used independently controlled burners. These burner units drew in cold air, which went through a heat exchanger. It then went through individual ducts that controlled the amount of heat in different areas. This was truly a revolutionary invention.

Margaret Ingels - The First Female Engineer

Born at around the same time, Margaret Ingels is famous for being the first female engineer graduate from the University of Kentucky. In fact, Willis Carrier enlisted Margaret as the engineer and educator of the Carrier Engineering Corporation as well as its spokesperson.

It didn’t take long for her interest in the industry to spark, and she became obsessed with air conditioning. After leaving the Carrier-Lyle Corporation for some time, she returned as the first woman air-conditioning engineer. She also educated other women on the advantage of indoor air conditioning. She even published nearly 50 papers on the subject.

Today’s Women of HVAC

Without women like Alice H. Parker and Margaret Ingels, the HVAC world wouldn’t have progressed as quickly as it did. The dedication these women had for the industry catapulted it into what the world knows today.

It might not seem like it because the HVAC industry is still widely male-dominated, but women in HVAC have always been respected. This is especially true today. Knowing this information, there really is nothing stopping the women of today. In fact, it’s safe to say that the world is a safer place because of women in the HVAC industry.
